1500? 2500? 3500? How Much RAM is Up to You

March 31st, 2018 by

From left to right: the 2018 RAM 1500, 2018 RAM 2500, and 2018 RAM 3500.

No two jobs are alike, and that’s precisely why the 2018 RAM pickup truck comes available in three different models: the 1500, the 2500, and the 3500. What’s the difference between these trucks and which one might be best for you? We’ll answer both of these questions below.

RAM 1500 vs. 2500 vs. 3500

The key difference between the RAM trucks of different numbers is largely just that — numbers. From body size to horsepower to towing and hauling capabilities, each RAM truck is designed to fill a certain niche.

The 2018 RAM 1500 greets drivers of the RAM family with up to 395 horsepower tucked into a 3.6L V6 engine that commands up to 10,620 pounds of towing capacity, and 1,880 pounds of payload.

The 2018 RAM 2500 improves on all those numbers behind a 5.7L Hemi V8 engine. The upgraded model means an upgrade in performance of up to 410 horsepower, 17,980 pounds of towing capacity, and 3,060 pounds of payload.

And for the grand finale, you’ll find the 2018 RAM 3500. And with the 3500, you’re talking serious numbers. Using the same size engine as the 2500, the 3500 achieves the same horsepower but overpowers the road with a whopping 930 lbs.-ft. of torque, 31,210 pounds of maximum towing capacity, and 4,080 pounds of payload. These numbers top the charts among competitors and allow the RAM to tow the heaviest of trailers.

The 1500 includes three different trim levels (Tradesman, Lone Star and Big Horn) while the 2500 and 3500 have two trims apiece in the Tradesman and SLT. The distinct trims provide drivers with different options for seating, materials, technology, and more.

Which One is For You?

Now that you know the key differences in these RAM trucks, the next step is to decide which one is best suited for you. The 1500 is enough truck for everyday driving coupled with weekend trips to the lake with a boat in tow. Opt for the 2500 if rugged terrain calls for additional horsepower or if you have a need for larger-than-average towing jobs. And go for the 3500 if you want the utmost in capability.
